On Friday 4th December we welcomed the Club President Bruce Sturrock, Club Captain Alistair Low, Past Captain Nick Mobbs, Chairman Richard Bateman and Club Manager, Tim Starbuck to the 2021 Great Yarmouth & Caister Golf Club, Men's Senior Section Year end presentation. And here is what followed...
On the 12th April saw the Pairs, competition put up by past Captain Rodney Beckett Shield
With 32 entries on a fine but blustery day it was nice to welcome members back to the golf course after lockdown, the winners on the day with a score of 41 points were Tim Barber and Billy Humpreys.
23rd April was the LINKS CUP 48 Players sunny but conditions very windy in 3rd place with 37 points was John Richardson in 2nd place with 38 points was Barry Norton but the winner on the day on c/back with 38 points was Graham Cross, there was no 2020 winner thanks to the ongoing pandemic.
On Friday 30th April it the Centenary Captains Tankard with the recent dry weather rock hard fairways were the order of the day, we had an excellent entry or players 50 in total. In 3rd place was Alan Spink’s with 38 pts, 2nd place Nico Hunt with 39 pts but the winner was Don Munro with an excellent score of 42 points.
We did play this competition in 2020 and the winner that day was Rodney Beckett.
7th May was a blustery day with the sun showing through another good entry of 50 players played for the NEEP BARREL, in 3rd place with 36 points was Jim Stewart, in 2nd place also with 36 points was Daniel McGonagle but the winner on the day with 40 points was Roger Yu and once again no winner in 2020 due to Covid.
4th June the weather was cloudy but the course had benefited from some badly needed overnight rain. With 43 players taking part in the Centenary Bogey, in 3rd place was Robert Walker plus one in 2nd place plus two was Brian Winn but the winner on c/back also plus two was Mike Hall. The Winner of this competition in 2020 was Alan 'Red One' Brooks.
On the 7th June was a pairs event previously known as the Weston Stag but renamed the Caister Stag the winners for 2021 being Mike Hall and Roger Walker with 45 points.
28th June the day started with some early drizzle and unusually for GY&C at this time of the year soft fairways and greens, with a field of 31 taking part in the Majestic Sports Trophy. We saw some good scoring on the day Glyn Chapman taking 3rd place with 36 points, in 2nd place with 38 points Paul Woollaston the winner on the day however again on c/back with 38 points was Graham Baynard.
On the 20th August we had 45 entries for the Lancs Trophy, the day was fine and dry with some sunshine which resulted in some good scoring.
In 3rd place on c/back with 38 pts Barry Norton, and if only I had not missed that tiddler on the 18th I would have had 39 points oh well. In second place on 41 points Tim Barber but the winner on the day with an excellent score which resulted in him being cut 4 shots that day with 46 points and winner of the Lancs Trophy, Wilf Gibbons. We also played this competition in 2020 and the winner that day was Paul Woollaston.
23rd August on a rearranged day due to earlier cancellation because of heavy rain we played for the S.S.A.F.A. all proceeds of this go to the charity which we have supported for a number of years. 35 players took part in second place was Glyn Chapman with 40 points but the winner with 41 pts was Rob Walker, both Rob and Glyn went on to represent the club at the final at Middleton Hall unfortunately they did not feature amongst the winners.
No 2020 competition due to Covid
10th September on a bright but blustery day with typical links greens 27 players took part in the Platten Tankard, 3rd place went to Paul Woollaston with 37 points second place with 39 points was Sid Hashem but the winner of the Platten Tankard with 40 points was Glyn Chapman. The winner of this competition in 2020 was Chris Reeve.
Friday 14th September was dry and warm the course was showing signs of lack of rain we played for the David Webb Memorial Bowl format was a Rainbow Waltz in third place with 83 points Robin Hodds, Tony Marjoram and Jim Stewart in second place with 84 points Graham Banyard, Nico Hunt and Billy Symonds the winners on the day with 85 points being Steve Greatrex and Tom Henderson with a prize going to Mike Day who was drawn out to make up the third person on the yellow tees. No play in 2020 due to Covid.
Friday 1st October, we held the David Futter Bowl that had been postponed from September with 40 players taking part on a dry but extremely windy day and with soft greens the winner of the David Futter Bowl 2021 with a score of 36 points was Bryan Smy. This competition was played in 2020 and the winner on that day was Brian Brister.
So to the John Browne Coal Trophy which is presented to the golfer with the best 6 scores over the 10 competitions played in the season. The winner of which in 2020 was Covid 19 the 2021 winner however is Glynn Chapman.
So that just leaves us with the only medal competition the Seniors Scratch Championship for which we have a new trophy along with the Handicap Championship and as in previous years the 70 plus championship all played for on the same day.
Played on the 2nd August an overcast and cool day with very firm conditions. I must thank our past Club Captain Alan 'Red One' Brooks for acting as starter on the day.
50 players took part and place vouchers have already been presented as follows in 5th place playing off a h/cap of 15 nett 69 Alan Spinks, in 4th place on c/b playing of a h/cap of 8 nett 68 Kevin Woods, in 3rd place on c/back playing off 17 nett 68 Dave Oliver, in 2nd place on c/b playing off 9 nett 68 and the winner also of the 70 plus Trophy Bryan Smy.
The winner of the GY&C Seniors Handicap Trophy for 2021 and a voucher for £40.00 playing off a handicap then of 16 and with a gross score of 83 nett 67 is Barry Norton.
The Seniors Scratch trophy was presented to Blair at the recent club presentation day.

Our sincerest congratulations to all of the worthy winners, and our thanks to everyone that helped organise the event, another brilliant team effort.
The Clubhouse was once again alive with the sounds of laughter and golfing chat, it really is reassuring to see such a vibrant Seniors Section at the club.
