A Swing Back in Time

Captain's Day 2024 Hickory Golf Event - A Resounding Success!

Captain’s Day 2024 at the golf club was a Hickory Golf Day that brought history, hilarity, and a healthy dose of competition to the links. While some members had initial reservations about playing with antique-style clubs, by the end of the day, everyone agreed - it was a day to remember. From the first drive to the final putt, the event was a resounding success.

The Build-Up: Excitement and Apprehension

It’s safe to say that Hickory golf stirred some curiosity and a bit of apprehension among our regulars. For many, the idea of using traditional wooden-shafted clubs was both intriguing and intimidating. But as someone who has been playing golf since childhood, I can confidently say that this event was one of the most enjoyable I’ve ever participated in. The sentiment was shared by all 18 teams that took part. The day was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a newfound appreciation for the game’s roots.

The Event: A Unique Experience

The day started with a warm welcome of coffee and bacon rolls, setting a relaxed tone for what was to come. After registering and receiving a card for our team along with a sleeve of balls, we were introduced to “Captain Hickory,” the charismatic figure who provided the vintage clubs. His enthusiasm was contagious, making the day feel even more special.

Each player was equipped with six clubs—far fewer than the standard fourteen most of us are used to. It was a challenge to adjust, but also a lesson in simplicity and strategy. As I stood there with my pencil bag and a wooden-shafted driver in hand, I couldn’t help but wonder why I usually carry so much more gear on the course.

The Play: Challenges and Laughter

The format was a Texas Scramble with a twist—“hickory variants” added to the mix. Our first challenge was the par-three 14th hole. The advice was to add two to the club number you’d normally use, so a six-iron became an eight-iron. Despite the novelty, my first swing with the polished driver was surprisingly solid, landing just off the green.

The day was full of these lighthearted moments. Whether it was a teammate's ball hilariously defying physics or the struggle to master the quirky hickory putter, the entire experience was filled with joy and a bit of self-deprecating humour.

The Atmosphere: More Than Just Golf

The atmosphere on the course was lively, with refreshments flowing and banter flying. Lager, Pimms, and sausage rolls kept spirits high as we navigated the “hickoryed” course. The laughter was infectious, and it became clear that the Hickory boys knew exactly how to keep a day on the links entertaining.

The Prizes: Celebrating in Style

As the day concluded, prizes were awarded not just for nearest the pins but also for the best-dressed golfers - a nod to the event's spirit of fun and tradition. The winning team, dressed in kilts to honour our Scottish Captain, were gracious in their victory, praising the event's unique format and fun moments.

The Finale: A Night to Remember

True to his word, the Captain hosted a fantastic evening of hospitality with a buffet of chilli and curry followed by a disco that lasted late into the night. The dance floor was a mix of Bay City Rollers meets Downton Abbey! capping off what was truly a day for the books.

In Conclusion

Captain’s Day 2024 was a resounding success, offering a perfect blend of tradition, fun, and friendly competition. Would I do it again? Without a doubt. The event was a sublime reminder of why we love this game and the camaraderie it brings. If you missed out, make sure you don’t next time - because this was a day that will be talked about for years to come.
